Singer-songwriter Akili returns with “I So Blue,” the hypnotic third single from his highly anticipated upcoming album, Tobago Nights.
Born during a profound period of personal uncertainty while Akili was in Panama, “I So Blue” emerged from a series of meaningful encounters that ultimately helped shape its message. A deeply personal exchange with his Tía Sharon offered Akili invaluable advice during a difficult moment. Shortly afterward, an unexpected reunion with an old friend, Griselle, echoed that same wisdom and reminded him of the strength he carried within.
As a parting gift, Griselle gave Akili Willie Dixon’s book I Am The Blues, providing the final spark that inspired the creation of the track.
Rather than seeking an easy escape from pain, “I So Blue” embraces the idea of moving directly through difficult experiences and emerging stronger on the other side. Blending Afrobeats, Reggae, and Blues, Akili creates a soulful sonic landscape where listeners are invited to confront their struggles, reconnect with their inner strength, and draw inspiration from ancestral wisdom.
Akili is a New York-based Afro-R&B artist whose music blends the rhythmic foundations of Afrobeats and Soca with contemporary R&B songwriting. Drawing inspiration from foundational artists such as Olatunji and Fireboy DML, Akili creates music that captures the spirit, energy, and complexity of the Caribbean experience while connecting with audiences around the world.
Every element of the record, from its lyrics and rhythms to its melodies and chords, supports its central theme of transforming emotional hardship into personal growth.
Akili recently gave listeners an early taste of “I So Blue” during a private Brooklyn event for the Stonewall CDC, offering an intimate preview of the track ahead of its official release.
The single marks the third release in Akili’s revamped rollout campaign, with a new single scheduled to arrive each month leading up to the release of Tobago Nights in October 2026.
