Black Sherif sounds like a man who has finally allowed himself to breathe. On SUN SHERIF, the Ghanaian singer and MC steps away from the heavy existential questions and self-destructive instincts that coloured his earlier work and embraces a noticeably lighter outlook on life.
The EP arrives after the emotional weight of 2022’s The Villain I Never Was and 2025’s IRON BOY, two projects that often placed Black Sherif in deeply reflective and sometimes unsettling spaces. This time, however, the energy is different. The darkness has not completely disappeared, but it feels less dominant. In its place is a sense of peace, hope, and a growing willingness to enjoy the life he has worked so hard to build.
For an artist who experienced a dramatic rise following his breakthrough Sermon series in 2021, that change in perspective feels significant. Fame brought opportunity, but it also exposed Black Sherif to the complicated realities of becoming one of Africa’s most recognisable young artists. SUN SHERIF suggests that he is no longer interested in carrying every burden that came with that journey.
That transformation is evident from the opening track, “Expresso”. The song looks back at the relentless ambition that defined his early years, but the hunger is now accompanied by a sense of calm. Black Sherif still wants excellence, but he sounds more comfortable with where his work has taken him and the position he occupies within African music.
“Forever”, featuring rising Ghanaian talent AratheJay, continues that theme. The collaboration finds Black Sherif acknowledging the rewards that have come from his relentless work while recognising that success comes with its own sacrifices. There is confidence in his delivery, but it is not the kind built purely on bravado. Instead, it comes from someone who has experienced the journey and understands both its privileges and its costs.
Romance also enters this new chapter, although Black Sherif approaches it carefully. Having spent much of his career exploring betrayal, grief and isolation, opening himself up emotionally does not come naturally. On the piano-led “Run Around”, he examines the walls he has built around himself while reflecting on a relationship that failed to become what he hoped it would be.
But if there is one idea that defines SUN SHERIF, it is letting go. The EP feels like Black Sherif consciously releasing some of the emotional baggage that has followed him and making room for something healthier. Instead of constantly looking backwards, he appears more willing to imagine what life could look like from here.
That feeling reaches its clearest expression on “Love Again”. The song finds Black Sherif confronting his complicated relationship with love and, perhaps more importantly, permitting himself to believe that he deserves it. After years of wrestling with doubt and difficult emotions, that simple act of opening his heart becomes one of the project’s most powerful statements.
The optimism surrounding SUN SHERIF was already beginning to emerge with “Find a Way”, his anthem for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign. That song offered an early glimpse of a Black Sherif willing to approach life from a more hopeful place, and the new EP expands that feeling into a more personal body of work.
Across SUN SHERIF, Black Sherif does not completely abandon the vulnerability that has always made his music compelling. Instead, he redirects it. The pain, ambition, and uncertainty remain part of his story, but they no longer have to control the narrative.
For an artist who has spent years documenting the difficult parts of becoming Black Sherif, SUN SHERIF feels like a moment of acceptance. He is still ambitious, still reflective and still willing to question himself, but there is finally some light coming through.
Black Sherif may not have all the answers yet, but SUN SHERIF suggests he is learning to enjoy the journey while searching for them.
