Legendary Southern hip hop group Nappy Roots continue their musical journey with the release of their latest single “Ain’t Have Alot” featuring Pynk Beard, delivering a heartfelt record rooted in gratitude, resilience, and staying true to where it all began.
The new track reflects the group’s long-standing ability to turn real-life experiences into relatable storytelling, blending their signature Southern sound with themes of perseverance and appreciating the journey. Formed in 1995 by students at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Nappy Roots built their identity around a unique blend of Southern hip hop, country influences, and honest storytelling. The original lineup featured Kentucky natives Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and Big V, alongside R. Prophet from Oakland and Georgia native Fish Scales.
The group began creating music at local record shop and studio ET’s Music, eventually releasing their debut album “Country Fried Cess” in 1998. Their distinctive Southern bounce caught the attention of major labels, leading to their signing with Atlantic Records and the release of their breakthrough album “Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz” in 2002.
The project introduced Nappy Roots to a global audience and was followed by “Wooden Leather” in 2003, further establishing their reputation as one of Southern hip hop’s most recognizable acts. Over the years, the group continued expanding their catalogue with projects including “The Humdinger” (2008), “The Pursuit of Nappyness” (2010), “Nappy Dot Org” (2011) with Organized Noize, and “The 40 Akerz Project” (2015).
Their later releases, including “Another 40 Akerz” (2017), featured collaborations with artists such as Ashley Rose, Gareth Asher, ForteBowie, and Jarren Benton, showcasing the group’s continued evolution while maintaining their signature sound.
