Nigerian-born, Berlin-based Afro-fusion artist DMC REIGNS has released “The Box,” a deeply reflective record taken from his latest EP, “Passport.” The song captures a vulnerable chapter in the artist’s life, exploring themes of identity, emotional pressure, self-expression, and the journey toward finding freedom within himself.

“The Box” was created during a period when DMC REIGNS felt overwhelmed by personal realities and the expectations placed on him by others. Inspired by the emotions he was carrying at the time, the song became an outlet for expressing feelings he struggled to share openly.

“I heard the beat for the first time around a period where I was overwhelmed by my realities. I felt my burdens were too overwhelming to share with people, I was too sensitive, so I wrote the song to define the strength in my ability to find solace in myself and more expression through my music,” DMC REIGNS explains.

The record reflects the experience of appearing strong for others while privately navigating personal struggles. Through honest songwriting, DMC REIGNS explores the feeling of being trapped by expectations, trying to meet the image people create of you while searching for the courage to embrace your true self.

“I called it ‘The Box’ because I was trapped in it,” he shares. “I was going through hard times yet smiling and being there for every other person, making everyone happy while deep down I was in a box trying to be boxed by exactly what every other person wants from me and not what I want from me.”

Recorded alone at home, “The Box” became one of the fastest songs DMC REIGNS has written, capturing a raw and immediate moment of self-reflection. The track represents a turning point where he began finding confidence in expressing his experiences through music.

The song forms part of DMC REIGNS’ EP “Passport,” a project that serves as a statement of identity and a reflection of his journey, background, and evolving sound.

“Passport is a statement of identity, a reflection of who I am, where I come from, and the many layers that make up my sound,” DMC REIGNS says. “Growing up in Nigeria, the idea of a passport meant more than travel. It was a symbol of identity. Those black-and-white passport photos, captured without smiles or poses, revealed something raw and honest, the self, stripped of performance. That’s what this project stands for, the real me.”

Each song on “Passport” represents a different chapter of his creative journey, with every track serving as a stamp from the experiences, influences, and emotions that have shaped him as an artist.

DMC REIGNS’ unique sound is rooted in his early musical upbringing. Beginning his journey in church at the age of nine under the guidance of his mother, a choir leader, he developed a strong foundation in music and spirituality. By age 12, he was already writing his own songs and later explored hip-hop and Afro-pop influences during his school years.

Although he studied medicine, music remained a constant passion. After completing his studies, DMC REIGNS chose to pursue his artistic career fully, building momentum through independent releases, social media platforms, and grassroots support from his earliest listeners, including his siblings.

Since relocating to Berlin in 2022, he has continued to expand his creative identity, blending Afro-fusion with spiritual and contemporary influences. Through his music, DMC REIGNS continues to tell stories of faith, culture, personal growth, and self-discovery.
