Independent artist Benedict J returns with his deeply personal new single, “Closing In (The Darkness),” an emotionally charged release that explores suicidal thoughts, mental health struggles, love and ultimately, hope.
Written during the early hours of January 2026, “Closing In (The Darkness)” began as a poem created during one of Benedict J’s darkest periods. What started as a private form of expression and a way of confronting difficult thoughts was later transformed into a song in March 2026, with the artist hoping his experience could resonate with others facing similar struggles.
The single draws listeners into a deeply personal account of an ongoing inner battle, but rather than ending in despair, Benedict J leaves room for hope. At its heart, the song becomes a heartfelt reflection on love, connection and the possibility of finding a reason to keep going.
One of the track’s defining characteristics is the contrast between its heavy subject matter and its energetic house-inspired production. Built around a catchy, upbeat melody, “Closing In (The Darkness)” offers listeners a song they can dance to while absorbing lyrics rooted in pain and vulnerability.
For Benedict J, that contrast is deliberate. By combining an accessible dance sound with an honest conversation about mental health, he hopes to reach listeners who may not normally seek out music addressing such serious themes.
“This is ultimately a sad song with a catchy upbeat house melody, which people can dance to whilst also crying. There is always hope — my true love came back to me.”— Benedict J
With “Closing In (The Darkness),” Benedict J transforms a deeply difficult personal experience into a message of resilience and hope. The single serves as a reminder that even during the darkest moments, connection, love and hope can still offer a reason to hold on.
