Nigerian vocal collective Kabusa Oriental Choir returns with ‘Cornerstone’, a new release celebrating African heritage, cultural identity and the feeling of finding home, wherever life takes you. Blending rich Igbo choral arrangements with contemporary Amapiano rhythms, the song brings the group’s distinctive vocal style into a dancefloor-ready setting.

Created with Africans living far from home in mind, ‘Cornerstone’ speaks to wanderers, travellers and anyone navigating life in a foreign country while searching for a sense of belonging. Its central message, “go where the love is,” offers a reminder that home can be found in the people, places and communities that make us feel accepted.

Musically, the single brings together the warmth of traditional Igbo ensemble vocals and the infectious pulse of modern Amapiano log drums. The combination allows Kabusa Oriental Choir to celebrate its cultural roots while exploring a sound designed to connect with listeners across different musical backgrounds.

‘Cornerstone’ also recalls the nostalgic appeal that helped the collective attract a global audience, while introducing fresh rhythmic energy to its evolving sound. The result is a meeting point between heritage and contemporary African music, with the choir’s layered vocals providing the foundation for the track’s modern production.

The release arrives as Kabusa Oriental Choir prepares for an upcoming European tour, giving the song added significance as the group looks towards connecting with audiences across the continent. Its themes of homecoming and cultural pride also speak directly to members of the African diaspora, for whom music can serve as a powerful link to familiar languages, traditions and experiences.

Kabusa Oriental Choir originated in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory and was founded by choir director Austin Chinemezu Nwamara on March 11, 2019. The group first attracted widespread online attention after publishing a choral cover mashup of Kizz Daniel’s ‘Yeba’ and DJ Spinall’s ‘Baba’. The performance helped introduce the choir’s distinctive approach to a much wider audience.

The collective became especially well known for its creative choir interpretations of popular songs, transforming familiar records through harmonies and ensemble arrangements. Over time, however, its work expanded beyond covers to include original compositions that reflect its own musical identity.

Among its releases is ‘The Corona Song’, written by Nwamara in 2020 to share information about COVID-19 during the pandemic. The group also released ‘Valentine Is Coming’, a song that became one of its most recognisable hits and gained international attention, particularly in the United Kingdom. The track received recognition on BBC Radio 1Xtra during Valentine’s week in 2019, and the choir has continued its tradition of releasing new verses each year.

In August 2020, the group released Liturgy, a live album that further documented its vocal style and creative approach. Its catalogue has since continued to reach listeners through original music and reinterpretations that connect choral traditions with contemporary popular culture.

One of the collective’s best-known releases, ‘Soso’, has surpassed 63 million streams, demonstrating the international reach of its music. ‘Cornerstone’ builds on that growing presence while giving the choir an opportunity to explore African identity and belonging through a fresh musical direction.

With its blend of Igbo choral expression and Amapiano production, ‘Cornerstone’ offers more than a rhythmic new release. It is a celebration of cultural connection and the comfort of finding people who make unfamiliar places feel like home.

As Kabusa Oriental Choir prepares for its European tour, the single reinforces the group’s commitment to bringing African musical traditions into contemporary spaces, creating music that honours its roots while reaching listeners around the world.
