Nigerian singer-songwriter Josh Dre is introducing a new chapter in his musical journey with “My Darling,” a romantic Afrobeats single that combines smooth vocals, rich Highlife influences and infectious percussion. The release builds on the momentum surrounding the artist, who won the Next to Stardom category at the TNM Awards.
On the new track, Josh Dre explores love, devotion and the reassurance needed to navigate uncertainty in a relationship. Addressing the person who has captured his heart, he expresses his commitment through captivating melodies, soulful guitar work and a vocal performance that brings warmth to the song’s central message.
“My Darling” balances contemporary Afrobeats production with the melodic textures of Highlife, creating a sound that feels both engaging and intimate. The rhythmic arrangement gives the record an easy groove, while Josh Dre’s smooth delivery keeps the focus on its romantic theme. Rather than overlooking the doubts that can arise between partners, he responds to them with affection and a clear declaration of love.
The release reflects an artistic journey shaped by years of musical development, live performance, and songwriting. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Joshua Akpan, professionally known as Josh Dre, has roots in Akwa Ibom State and maternal ties to Osun State. His interest in music began in church, where he played the djembe drum and sang backup vocals before developing his songwriting and performance skills during high school and college.
Josh Dre officially began his recording career in 2014 with an independently released single. While studying at Central University, he became a recognised figure in the school’s music community, earning consecutive nominations for Most Entertaining Student in 2016 and 2017. Those early experiences helped lay the groundwork for a career that would extend beyond campus performances into the wider music industry.
His reputation as a live performer has also grown through appearances across West Africa. Notable highlights include headlining the Black Star International Film Festival in 2020 and performing at Gold Block Party ’22 alongside Lojay, Victony, BNXN and King Promise. These performances have provided opportunities for him to connect with audiences while showcasing his stage presence.
Beyond his own releases, Josh Dre has contributed to other artists’ music as a songwriter. He co-wrote Sefa’s hit single “Fever,” demonstrating his ability to work beyond his own recording projects. His music has also achieved chart success in more than 17 countries, reflecting the international reach he has developed throughout his career.
Sonically, Josh Dre draws inspiration from a wide range of African and international artists, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Banky W, Wande Coal, Don Jazzy, Drake, The Weeknd, Sean Paul, Beyoncé and Chris Brown. These influences inform an approach that brings together melodic songwriting, contemporary rhythms and expressive vocals while leaving room to explore different sounds.
His writing is shaped by themes of love, resilience, ambition and personal experience, allowing him to balance individual stories with emotions that listeners can recognise in their own lives. On “My Darling,” that approach takes a romantic direction, with the singer focusing on the importance of reassurance and remaining committed when a relationship faces uncertainty.
Following his TNM Awards recognition, the single offers another opportunity for Josh Dre to build on his growing profile and introduce his sound to new listeners. By pairing Afrobeats energy with the warmth of Highlife and a heartfelt message, he delivers a record designed for both relaxed listening and romantic moments.
