Cameroonian singer and songwriter Ulanda is back with her new single “YAMO,” featuring fellow Cameroonian artist Tenor, as she continues to bring together the musical influences that have shaped her journey between Cameroon and the United States.
Born on December 31 in the beautiful coastal town of Limbe, Cameroon, Ulanda grew up in a loving and musically nurturing household surrounded by her parents, siblings and extended family. Music became an important part of her early life, providing a foundation that would eventually shape her own career as a singer and songwriter.
In August 2011, Ulanda relocated from Cameroon to the United States, leaving behind the country and environment she had always known. The transition was an emotional experience, but her mother’s advice and her naturally upbeat spirit helped her look beyond the difficulty of leaving home and recognize the opportunities that came with starting a new chapter.
Ulanda would later return home, reconnecting with her Cameroonian roots and the cultural influences that had helped shape her musical identity.
That connection is reflected in the way she approaches music. Known for her sultry voice and contemporary sound, Ulanda draws from Makossa, Soul, Pop, R&B and Afrobeats, using her voice almost like another instrument. Her interest in vocal harmonies and different musical traditions allows her to move comfortably between genres while maintaining an identity that remains distinctly her own.
With “YAMO,” her collaboration with Tenor adds another dimension to that sound. The single brings together two artists from Cameroon, connecting Ulanda’s contemporary approach with Tenor’s established presence within the country’s modern music scene.
