Spotify Introduces AI Persona Badges to Bring Greater Transparency to Artist Profiles

Spotify is introducing a new AI Persona badge designed to help listeners distinguish between human artists and artist identities that are generated or presented using artificial intelligence.

The new feature forms part of Spotify’s broader push to strengthen artist identity and trust as generative AI continues to reshape the music industry. The streaming platform says transparency is increasingly important as AI-generated music and digital artist identities become more common.

Beginning in mid-September, listeners will start seeing AI Persona badges on relevant artist profiles, including within Spotify Search, artist pages and track rows across playlists. The badge will indicate that an artist’s public identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person.

Artists can already disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. Spotify will also conduct its own reviews of artist profiles where the public identity presented through imagery and other profile information appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated person.

The initial review process will focus on artist profiles that meet specific audience thresholds, with Spotify saying the approach is intended to cover the majority of artist profiles that listeners actively visit.

For profiles where Spotify applies the designation, the artist will be notified and given the opportunity to either self-disclose as an AI Persona or appeal the decision. Spotify also plans to introduce a reporting system that will allow listeners to flag profiles they believe represent AI Personas for review.

Importantly, Spotify says the new badge is focused specifically on artist identity rather than the way music is created. An artist using AI as part of their songwriting, production or other creative processes does not automatically become an AI Persona.

The company already provides AI Credits that allow artists to disclose how AI was used in the creation of a track, while SongDNA provides additional information about the artists and contributors involved in a recording.

Spotify is also connecting the new initiative to its existing verification and artist protection tools. Verified by Spotify indicates that an artist is a real person presenting themselves authentically on the platform, while Artist Profile Protection allows artists to review and approve releases delivered to their profiles, helping prevent music from being incorrectly attributed to them.

Another element of Spotify’s approach is its recommendation system. By default, music from AI Personas will not be included in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations. Listeners may still encounter and receive music from AI Personas in situations such as following the artist directly.

Spotify says its programming will continue to focus on supporting authentic artists building careers in music, while its algorithms are also being adjusted to reduce the presence of spam, low-effort content and other forms of what the company describes as “slop.”

The introduction of AI Persona badges represents another step in Spotify’s effort to give listeners more context around the music and artists they discover. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into the music ecosystem, the platform is positioning identity transparency as an important part of maintaining trust between artists and their audiences.
