Nigerian Afrobeats artist Dozi explores irresistible attraction and late-night romance on his new single “SLOW,” a sensual Afro-fusion record built around hypnotic rhythms, smooth melodies and the feeling of wanting more.

At 105 BPM, “SLOW” takes a measured approach to Afrobeats, allowing its groove to settle into a relaxed and intimate space. Rather than relying on high-energy percussion, the record creates its appeal through melody and atmosphere, giving Dozi room to explore the rush of attraction, obsession, and emotional desire.

The result is a song designed for late-night listening, romantic moments and repeat plays. Its smooth Afrobeat groove provides a natural foundation for Dozi’s melodic delivery, while the sensual character of the record places it comfortably within the growing intersection of Afrobeats and contemporary R&B.

“SLOW” also offers an introduction to Dozi’s developing sound as he continues to position himself for a wider audience. Born Njoku Gregory and known professionally as Dozi, the Nigerian artist hails from Imo State and was born and raised in Lagos.

Growing up in Lagos exposed Dozi to a rich musical environment that would eventually shape his own ambitions. His interest in music began at an early age, when he would mimic songs and compositions from artists he admired, including Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, and Wande Coal.

That early fascination gradually developed into songwriting and music-making. As Dozi began creating his own songs, his influences expanded across Afrobeats, Afropop and Highlife, giving him a foundation from which to develop his own approach.

His sound is also influenced by the broader Afro-Caribbean musical landscape. Dozi describes his style as “Unlock Music,” a subgenre under Afrobeats that he associates with a cry for freedom.

That idea of freedom gives his music an identity beyond simply following existing Afrobeats trends. It reflects an artist interested in using the genre as a vehicle for self-expression while drawing from the rhythms and melodies that have made African music increasingly global.

On “SLOW,” that approach takes a more intimate form. The song focuses on the pull of attraction and the inability to easily walk away from someone who has captured your attention. The hypnotic groove reinforces that feeling, creating a sense of repetition that mirrors the song’s central theme of wanting more.

Dozi’s melodic direction also helps keep the record accessible. While rooted in Afro-fusion, “SLOW” carries a crossover quality that allows it to sit comfortably alongside contemporary Afrobeats and Afro-R&B records.

The track’s relaxed tempo and romantic atmosphere make it particularly suited to playlists built around late-night listening and intimate moods. It is less concerned with creating a massive moment and more focused on creating an atmosphere that listeners can settle into.

For Dozi, the release is another step in a musical journey that began with childhood admiration for global and African music legends. Those early influences have evolved into a desire to establish a sound that can travel beyond Nigeria while remaining connected to the musical culture that shaped him.

With Lagos as an important part of his story and Afrobeats at the centre of his musical identity, Dozi is looking to take his music to a global audience.

“SLOW” gives listeners a glimpse of that ambition through a record that balances sensuality, melody and rhythm. As Dozi continues developing his “Unlock Music” sound, the single marks another step toward his goal of becoming an Afrobeats export capable of carrying his interpretation of African music to audiences around the world.
