Montreal-based artist Rooga160 has unveiled his latest project, Family First Dancehall — a deeply personal EP that blends his Caribbean roots with the diverse influences of his Montreal upbringing. The project is a vibrant mix of dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop, channeling years of passion for music into a sound that feels both authentic and refreshingly modern.
Born and raised in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Rooga160 grew up inspired by dancehall greats like Red Rat, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Vybz Kartel, as well as reggae icons such as Bob Marley and Beres Hammond. Now living in Montreal’s Uptown Côte-des-Neiges, he draws from both worlds — weaving the rhythms of his childhood with the realities of his environment to create music that resonates across borders.
“Family 1st Dancehall is a project made from the heart,” says Rooga160. “It represents my lifelong love for this culture and the journey that has shaped me as an artist.”
Music has always been a family affair for Rooga160. He first began freestyling alongside relatives before transitioning into recording with local producers like Fleaa at Collin Stylex Studio. His growth over the years has produced three EPs — Inspired By Music From Birth, Chasing My Dreams, and now, Family 1st Dancehall. The name “Rooga,” a nickname from his youth, stuck with him as he carved out his identity through both hustle and music.
Beyond the studio, Rooga160 has brought his dynamic energy to stages across Canada, having opened for acts such as Paul Wall, Skeng, and Roney, and performed at events including Jamaica Day, Canada Day, and Vincy Picnic. Each performance has fueled his mission to create songs that transcend genres, connect with diverse audiences, and share his love of music worldwide.
