Ghanaian artist 09scary, born Romeo Odame, is turning years of doubt, struggle and determination into motivation with his new single “GTR.”
At 24, the Accra-based artist has built his identity around confronting the realities of chasing a dream when the people around you may not believe in it. “GTR” captures that journey through the perspective of someone who has continued working toward his goals despite the uncertainty and obstacles along the way.
The idea behind the record is simple but personal: there was a time when nobody believed in the dream, and now that same dream is beginning to become reality. For 09scary, that transformation represents more than success. It is evidence of what can happen when persistence outlasts doubt.
His music has consistently drawn from real-life experiences, including betrayal, relentless hustle, social anxiety and the pressure that comes with wanting to achieve something bigger. Rather than hiding those experiences, 09scary uses them as material, creating music that reflects both the difficult moments and the ambition that keeps him moving.
That approach has helped him develop a distinctive identity within Ghana’s emerging music scene. The artist first began attracting attention through freestyles, using the format to express his perspective on life and the challenges of navigating the African music industry.
There is an uncompromising quality to 09scary’s artistry. He does not limit himself to one particular sound, moving between Afrobeats, Hip-Hop and R&B depending on what the music requires. That genre flexibility allows him to explore different sides of his personality while maintaining the directness that has become central to his work.
“GTR” is therefore more than a song about achieving a particular dream. It represents the mindset of someone who has had to keep believing in himself before there was enough evidence for anyone else to believe too.
That mentality was already visible in 09scary’s 2023 debut EP, All Eyes on Me. The project introduced listeners to his sound and helped establish his presence on the Ghanaian music scene, eventually reaching No. 21 on Apple Music Ghana.
Tracks such as “FASHOO” and “GTR” became important parts of that early chapter, helping bring more attention to an artist who was building his profile through his own perspective and a willingness to speak openly about his experiences.
Since then, 09scary has continued developing the identity that first emerged through those releases. His music reflects an artist interested in the realities behind ambition, from the pressure of survival to the emotional impact of betrayal and the anxiety that can accompany trying to find your place.
There is also a larger ambition running through his work. 09scary is not simply interested in making music within a local scene. His aspirations extend toward global recognition, and that desire is reflected in the confidence and urgency he brings to his music.
With “GTR,” that ambition feels especially personal. The song stands at the intersection of where 09scary has been and where he believes he is going, turning the memory of being doubted into motivation to keep moving forward.
For an artist who has built his following through freestyles, personal storytelling and an unapologetic approach to genre, “GTR” offers another glimpse into the mindset driving his journey.
09scary may still be building, but the message behind “GTR” is clear: being overlooked does not mean the dream is impossible. Sometimes, the strongest motivation comes from proving wrong the people who never believed it could happen.
