Veteran Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist and composer Delips Apo has officially released his latest album Romeo and Juliet, a vibrant body of work that blends infectious Afro pop rhythms with contemporary African sounds, marking a bold new chapter in his long-standing musical journey.
Now available on all major streaming platforms, Romeo and Juliet showcases Delips Apo’s signature approach to music creation, combining live instrumentation, layered production, and genre-spanning influences. The project reflects both his experience and his continued evolution as an artist dedicated to pushing the boundaries of African music.
Created in his recording studio in Accra, Ghana, the album highlights Delips Apo’s exceptional musicianship. While known for performing keyboards and guitar on stage, he is a multi-instrumentalist proficient across nearly all instruments. For this project, he focused on building rich rhythmic foundations, starting with drum patterns, bass lines, synth riffs, organ melodies, and percussive layers that form the backbone of the album’s sound.
One of the creative intentions behind the project was to craft music tailored for dance culture while maintaining strong musical depth. This vision is reflected throughout the album’s energetic and rhythm-driven compositions, which balance groove with intricate musical arrangement.
Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Delips Apo is an internationally experienced artist whose career spans decades. He began his musical journey at the age of 16 and has since worked with over 15 bands, leading or forming three of his own. His early breakthrough came with recordings in London alongside his band Delips and the Godfathers, culminating in a CBS-released album in the early 1980s that found success across Europe and Africa.
He later achieved further recognition with the album DADADY, which reached number one on African charts via Stern’s Records, as well as the UK-charting single “I Can Feel the Groove.” His independent releases, including Hula Celebrations and Dideo, further demonstrate his adaptability and global reach.
Across his career, Delips Apo has performed extensively across Africa and Europe, including major shows in Freetown, Stockholm, and Copenhagen with his band KUTASHI. His musical style continues to evolve, incorporating elements of funk, soul, Latin, highlife, reggae, blues, and traditional African sounds.
On Romeo and Juliet, Delips Apo continues to refine his self-developed sonic identities, Ritual Fusion and Afro Afro, blending Western and African influences into a unified contemporary sound that reflects his artistic philosophy.
Influenced by legends such as Bob Marley, Delips Apo’s work remains rooted in rhythm, storytelling, and cultural expression, reinforcing his status as one of Ghana’s enduring and versatile musical figures.
With the release of Romeo and Juliet, Delips Apo reaffirms his place in African music history while continuing to explore new creative territories for future generations.
